Virus Structure:
The Mumps virus is a single-stranded and enveloped RNA virus. The single strand of RNA consists of about 16-18 kbp. It a member of the Paramyxovirus family, and it is approximately 150 nm to 300 nm in diameter. The Mumps virus has a helically symmetrical and tube-shaped nucleocapsid that contains a monopartite, or meaning it has a single molecule of nucleic acid, RNA genome and an RNA-directed RNA polymerase. There are spikes on the envelope that contain two glycoproteins, a viral attachment protein, and fusion protein. An M protein forms the structure that is under the envelope. There is only one serotype of this virus.
